Klasse Goetz, a group of graphic design students at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, guided by Gabriele Franziska Götz, created an exhibition around the theme of piracy at the Caricatura gallery space. After the official opening on January 23, I’m spending a few days in Kassel to discuss their individual work for the show. This print is my contribution to their project.
End of 2009, the hijacking of both commercial freighships and private yachts near the coast of Somalia seems to be at it’s peak. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICCWBO) even started to keep a real-time map of pirate attacks around the world, embedded in Google maps
The Jolly Roger flag (left), already an immensly popular fashion item (partly due to the ongoing series of american fantasy/adventure films Pirates of the Carribean), is gaining a new edge. But the flag of the United Nations flag (right), probably intended to symbolize a globe, could also be interpreted as the sight of a gun.
Kneading leading newspaper mastheads into something more ‘gothic’.
