A graphic environment based on posters from the Dutailly Collection, the historical fundament of the annual International Poster and Graphic Arts Festival of Chaumont, May 21 – June 26, 2005

From a preselection of 500 vintage posters (10% of appr. 5.000 originals), hunderds of elements were transferrred from the originals to black paper.
Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760 – 1849) The Great Wave off Kanagawa (left) has become THE international icon for Japanese woodblockprints and ukiyo-e art in general. In this project it refers to to Japonism, the wave of Japanese images washing over Japan and influncing art and design during the 19th century.
Sea monsters from Hokusai Manga (right), his ‘involuntairy sketches’ in which he tried to capture his entire universe.
The composition is basically built from the contour of France, the location of Chaumont, plus the wave and some sea creatures… To ensure impact though overprinting, it’s crucial to have a combination of positive and negative elements.
